David has been very busy at the Weizmann and is now down in Eilat for a conference. Unfortunately, he hasn’t had much of a chance to send me any photos for the blog. I have spoken to Abby every day and it sounds like she is having a marvelous time. She has been to Scouts with Zohar and Tamar (Tuesday), painting with Tamar (Wednesday - Abby and Tamar did this activity, followed by a playdate, almost every week last year) and they also went to the Sportek playground (Thursday). Of course, they were at school every day until 1:30 as well. Abby will be spending the “weekend” with Tamar’s family and then moving over to Zohar’s place on Sunday after school.

After uneventful flights and a safe arrival last night, David and Abby were ready to get to work. Here is a photo of Abby’s arrival at school this morning. Her girlfriends were very excited to see her again. Sounds like she had a good day all round, although I’m sure the jet lag will catch up with her at some point. David was busy all day with a conference. The weather is very nice - I noticed that it was 22 degrees at 5:00 pm! I do miss the weather in Israel for sure.

David & Abby Return to Israel

Our sabbatical is long over and we are getting back into the swing of things back home. Getting resettled and organized took a LOT longer than we thought it would - and we thought it would take a really long time! I suppose getting a puppy and a kitten didn’t help, but that’s just like us. Just when we’re pretty sure we can’t manage our lives, we turn around and make them more complicated.

Now on to the point of this post. David and Abby have just landed in Israel. They will be there for 2.5 weeks and then stop over in Oxford for a few days on the way home. Abby is staying with friends in Rehovot. David will attend a workshop at the Weizmann, a conference in Eilat and then return to the Weizmann to continue working on a few things he started during sabbatical. He and Abby will also travel around a little bit and visit with family. Abby will attend school and will be with her class from last year. Not the same teacher, unfortunately, as she is on leave this year. This is a big adventure for Abby and I am excited for her to reconnect with her old friends.

England Day 2: Legoland!

Lego Bricks

Today we went to Legoland in Windsor. We had wanted to combine this with a visit to Windsor Castle, but we didn’t get going early enough today. The girls have been a bit under the weather, so we took it easy a little bit in the morning. Not so much in the afternoon. We put a lot of miles on our little feet and had lots of fun. We stopped for dinner at a nice pub in a small town on the way home. It was called the Grouse & Ale and it was in Lane End.

England Day 1: A Pub and a Museum

Pyrite = Fools Gold

After a late start on Day 1 due to a late arrival last night, we headed into the center of Oxford for lunch. We ended up at one of Charles’ favourite pubs - The Eagle and Child. The kids thought that it was pretty interesting and the food was not too bad. After lunch we headed over to the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. The girls really enjoyed the dinosaurs and the rocks and the animals. I was quite taken by the huge chunk of pyrite shown here.

Our Trip Home: Phase I

4:08 am

The preparation for this trip actually began weeks before, but I will start this blog with dinner with the Kurtzmans, which took place on June 30th around 7:00 pm - our last night in Israel. While Trudy took Zoe, Miri and Naomi to their house, I went and picked up Abby from Tamar’s. On the way over, I got a phone call that someone was waiting at our gate to buy our extra cell phone. So, I dropped Abby off at the Kurtzmans’ and ran to our place to deal with that. Ended up he could not use the phone, so that was a bust. After a delicious dinner I had a great cup of coffee. It was not so much that the coffee was so fantastic–standard Israeli black mud coffee–but the memory of sitting and relaxing with friends enjoying my last such coffee for some time while there were so many things to be done is very strong with me.

After that moment, everything becomes a little fuzzy. Packing all night (2 hours of sleep); selling items to strangers that came over during the evening; cleaning the apartment; packing up the bikes, etc. I have to thank Dani for coming over and washing our dishes and cleaning the kitchen–I know is sounds strange but Irit and Dani kept asking how they could help and this was the only thing that I could think of. It was a HUGE help to have clean dishes and not have to worry about that mess–thanks. Also, thanks to Amit for coming over to help out. Amit and Dani’s help with packing the bicycles was very welcome.

In the morning, we were 80% packed and the guys who were scheduled to take our luggage to the airport at 11:30 showed up at 9:30 saying “Where is the stuff?”. We of course were shocked. We stalled them until 11:00 but we were still not 100% ready when we left. I got in the truck with them and went with the stuff while Trudy tried to finish up at the house. We met Amit at the airport (he took the day off to help us–again a huge thank you!). But once we got there I realized that I had to turn around and go home to finish up a few things (pay parking tickets, mail a few things and pack one last box to go into the mail). So, I grabbed a cab and went back leaving Amit watching 6 airport carts with 16 pieces of luggage (8 hockey bags, 4 boxes, and 4 bike boxes). Once I got home, I did the last few remaining things–well, actually, I asked Liza to take care of them and she agreed (thank you Liza). We packed up the last box and got the kids ready for the trip.

Once we arrived at the airport, Amit had to leave right away–called back to work. So, we were on our own–Trudy, me, the four kids and our 8 luggage carts (we added all of our carry-on, which consisted of 5 rolling suitcases, 1 large gym bag and 6 backpacks). Thankfully, BA supplied a helper to assist with the kids (not the luggage, but the kids). Her name was Orit and she was awesome! She made the move through security quick and smooth and then helped get us checked in and moving through security (yes, two security checks), passport control and into the departure area. Without her help, we probably would not have made our plane on time! Of course the girls were hungry and thirsty, so while Trudy went ahead to the gate with Miri, Zoe and Naomi, Abby and I went and bought some snacks. We arrived at the gate just as everybody was loading onto the plane. With some difficulty, we found our seats and finally relaxed (sort of). Needless to say, Trudy and I were exhausted.

The Weather in England

June 30, 2008 10:19 am
Weather Icon - Rain & Cold

Yikes, it’s not exactly what I could call summer. Just checked the weather forecast for Oxford. Showers and a high of just 19 EVERY single day until the day we leave. I guess I’ll go pack the raincoats and umbrellas now…

Blog is All Fixed

8:37 am

Well, we got the photos all working again last week and David has uploaded photos for each week. I haven’t managed to get caught up connecting photos with posts yet, though. I’m stuck back in March - Purim, to be precise. If you like, you can go back to the last post I fixed up and then go backwards a bit. As much as I would like to fix up the rest of the posts ASAP, I can’t. We are flying to England tomorrow at 5:00 pm - as you can see on my nifty countdown. We are packing madly. Today is the last day of school for the girls, which is good, because we need the time to pack.

Yamit 2000!

June 24, 2008 10:43 pm

Well, instead of packing all day as we were supposed to, we took all of the girls out of school and went to a water park nearby in Holon. We had intended to go on Saturday, but, when we pulled up, the parking lot was completely full, so we aborted. Given today was a weekday, the line-ups were very reasonable and we had a great day. Miriam did many slides, one even by herself. Her swimming is really coming along. Abby and Zoë had a great time on most of the different slides.

Beach Again! & Farewell at Pua and Baruch’s

We tried to go to a waterpark today, but the it looked way too busy, so we went to Herzlia beach instead. We spent most of the day there and Amit joined us for a few hours. Zoë was stung by a medusa (jellyfish). It was very painful and left an angry red mark accompanied by a great deal of swelling. We also had a great ice cream treat at Ariah ice cream. Afterwards we went to Pua and Baruch’s for BBQ and a farewell to the family. We have really appreciated having family here and the girls are going to miss their cousins and the trips to Kadima.
